For long-form material the container matters more than the codec. An audiobook or podcast benefits from chapters and per-file metadata that a bare stream cannot represent, and AAC holds up well at the low bitrates spoken word uses. Variable bitrate is not offered, for the same reason as the raw AAC tool: the encoder's variable mode is inconsistent between builds, so constant and average bitrate are used instead and the output stays predictable from one run to the next.
Where it stops:
- AAC is lossy, so this is not an archive format.
- No variable-bitrate mode.
- Metadata and album art are only carried when the preserve option is chosen, and that path needs the encoder download.
- One file per run.
- Nothing is normalised on the way through, so the source's balance is preserved rather than improved.
