What is the difference between AAC and M4A here?
The audio is identical — both use the AAC codec. This tool writes a raw AAC stream with an .aac extension, while the M4A converter wraps the same audio in an MP4 container. Choose M4A if you want reliable tags, chapters and album art; choose raw AAC for streaming pipelines that expect it.
Why do the bitrates start at 96 instead of 64?
AAC is more efficient than MP3, so its useful range sits higher and narrower. 128 kbps AAC is roughly comparable to 192 kbps MP3, which is why this ladder runs 96 to 256 rather than reusing MP3's 64 to 320.
Why is there no VBR option for AAC?
The encoder's variable-bitrate mode behaves inconsistently across builds, producing unpredictable results on some inputs. Rather than ship a control that quietly misbehaves, AAC output stays on constant and average bitrate only.
Is AAC better than MP3?
At the same bitrate, usually yes — especially below 160 kbps. AAC is the default for YouTube, Apple Music and most streaming services. MP3 still wins on universal compatibility with older hardware.
