Why are Opus bitrates so much lower than MP3's?
Opus is the most efficient codec here. It holds up at bitrates where MP3 falls apart — 96 kbps Opus is comfortably better than 128 kbps MP3, so the ladder tops out at 192 rather than 320. Higher numbers would mostly waste space.
What is Opus actually used for?
Almost all modern real-time voice and video: WhatsApp voice notes, Discord, Zoom, WebRTC calls and YouTube's newer streams. It was standardised as RFC 6716 specifically to handle both speech and music well at low latency.
Why is variable bitrate the default?
Opus was designed around VBR and its constant-bitrate mode exists mainly for fixed-bandwidth links. Leaving VBR on lets the encoder allocate bits by demand, which is where its efficiency advantage comes from.
Where will Opus files not play?
Older hardware, most car stereos, and older portable players. Support in browsers, Android and desktop software is excellent, but Opus is a poor choice for anything that needs to work on legacy devices — use MP3 there.
