Frequently asked questions
Does a higher compression level mean lower quality?
No. FLAC is lossless at every level, so level 0 and level 12 decode to bit-identical audio. The level only trades encoding time against file size — higher levels work harder to make the file smaller and take longer to do it.
How much smaller is FLAC than WAV?
Typically 40 to 60 percent smaller depending on the material — dense, loud mixes compress less than sparse acoustic recordings. You get the exact same samples back, which is the whole point of using it over a lossy format.
Should I convert my MP3 collection to FLAC?
No. FLAC preserves whatever it is given, so a FLAC made from an MP3 is a large file that faithfully reproduces the MP3's existing losses. Convert to FLAC from CD rips, WAV or other lossless sources.
What plays FLAC files?
Most modern players and platforms, including recent iOS and Android, VLC, foobar2000 and Plex. Some older car head units and dedicated MP3 players still do not, so check the target device before converting an entire library.
