What is the difference between AIFF and WAV?
Both store the same uncompressed PCM audio at the same size — the difference is byte order and heritage. AIFF is Apple's format and stores samples big-endian; WAV is Microsoft's and stores them little-endian. Quality is identical, so pick whichever your software prefers.
Why would I choose AIFF over WAV?
Mainly for Apple-centric production work. Logic Pro, GarageBand and older Pro Tools sessions handle AIFF natively, and AIFF's metadata support is cleaner than plain WAV's, which never had a proper tagging standard.
How large will my AIFF file be?
The same as an equivalent WAV — roughly 10 MB per minute of 16-bit stereo at 44.1 kHz, or about 16 MB per minute at 24-bit. There is no compression, so duration and bit depth alone determine size.
Does converting MP3 to AIFF improve quality?
No. AIFF stores exactly what it receives, so an AIFF made from a lossy source is a much larger file containing the same audio. Convert from lossless sources when the goal is quality.
