Should I use WMA?
WMA uses an older, basic encoder. For better quality and wider compatibility, we recommend MP3 or M4A instead — choose WMA only if you specifically need compatibility with legacy Windows software.
Why is the bitrate capped at 192 kbps?
The wmav2 encoder stops giving useful returns above that point — pushing higher mostly grows the file without a matching improvement in what you hear. The ladder stops where the codec does.
Why is there no VBR option for WMA?
wmav2 has no meaningful variable-bitrate mode in this encoder, so offering the toggle would imply a capability that does not exist. WMA output is constant bitrate only.
What still needs WMA files?
Mostly older Windows software, legacy Windows Media Player playlists, some corporate or archival systems, and a handful of pre-2010 portable devices. If none of that applies to you, another format will serve you better.
