Triangle Wave Generator
You Might Also Need
Triangle Wave Generator produces a linear rise followed by a linear fall, the gentlest of the classic geometric waveforms. It carries a fraction of the upper harmonics of a square or sawtooth at the same pitch.
What is Triangle Wave Generator?
The waveform climbs evenly to its peak, descends evenly to its trough and repeats, with no flat sections and no instantaneous jumps. Frequency, duration and amplitude are the three controls, and the file is written when you press generate.
What the panel gives you:
- Frequency from one hundredth of a hertz to twenty thousand, defaulting to 440 hertz, with a fine hundredth-hertz step for tuning work.
- Duration from a tenth of a second to sixty seconds, defaulting to three.
- An amplitude slider from one to one hundred percent, defaulting to fifty.
- A sample rate selector offering 44.1 and 48 kilohertz.
The shape is built by scaling the fractional part of the phase, doubling it and reflecting it at the halfway point, which produces a perfectly straight rise and fall. Sample-exact checks land where they should: the output sits at its lowest value at the start of the cycle, crosses zero at the quarter and three quarter points, and reaches its peak at the halfway point. That geometry is what makes the spectrum behave. A triangle contains only odd harmonics, like a square, but each falls in level as one over the square of its order, so the third harmonic sits nearly ten decibels below where it would in a square and the higher partials vanish quickly. The practical upshot is a tone with a clear pitch and a soft, almost flute-like edge that emphasises the fundamental and lowers its upper content. Because the straight segments still change direction abruptly at the peaks and troughs, the spectrum is not empty above the harmonics, and no band-limiting is applied, although the energy up there is far lower than in a sawtooth. A triangle wave is also the easiest shape to verify by eye, because a quarter cycle lands exactly on a zero crossing and the halfway point lands exactly at the peak, so the generated values can be checked against the shape they should describe. The tone that results sits between the purity of a sine and the bite of a square, which makes it the shape to reach for when a little harmonic colour is wanted without the brightness.
Where it differs from its neighbours:
- Only odd harmonics are present, and they fall away quickly, so the shape sounds soft rather than rich.
- The direction changes at the peaks and troughs are abrupt, so a small amount of high-frequency content remains beyond the listed harmonics.
- There is no filter and no band-limiting to shape what is there.
- Only one polarity is generated, with no inverted option.
- Amplitude is a linear percentage rather than a level in decibels.
- The file is mono and limited to sixty seconds.
Use it when a defined pitch with a mild harmonic edge is what you want: a less fatiguing test tone than a square, a soft upper layer in a mix, or a signal for checking how a system treats a smooth slope rather than a step. The sine wave generator removes the harmonics entirely if purity matters, while the square and sawtooth generators move in the opposite direction with much brighter spectra at the same pitch.
How to use Triangle Wave Generator
- Set the frequency, using the fine step if you are aiming at an exact pitch.
- Choose the duration and the amplitude.
- Pick the sample rate and press generate.
- Listen to the preview, then download the file if the tone is right.
When to use Triangle Wave Generator vs related tools
Triangle Wave Generator is the choice when a pitch needs a little harmonic character rather than a bright edge or total purity. Square Wave Generator provides a similarly simple spectrum but a much brighter result, and Sawtooth Wave Generator is brighter still. Sine Wave Generator sits at the other extreme with no harmonics at all, and Tone Generator puts every shape behind one set of controls.
