Sawtooth Wave Generator

Sawtooth Wave Generator produces the rising ramp shape, the brightest of the classic waveforms and the one closest to the harmonic series of a bowed string. Frequency, duration and level are adjustable.
What is Sawtooth Wave Generator?
The waveform climbs linearly from its lowest value to its highest and then wraps instantly back to the bottom, repeating every cycle. Three controls set the frequency, the length and the amplitude, and the file is written on generate.
What the panel gives you:
- Frequency from one hundredth of a hertz to twenty thousand with a fine step, defaulting to 110 hertz.
- Duration from a tenth of a second to sixty seconds, defaulting to three.
- An amplitude slider from one to one hundred percent, defaulting to fifty.
- A sample rate selector covering 44.1 and 48 kilohertz.
The linear ramp is computed straight from the fractional part of the phase, so the rise is perfectly even and the wrap is instantaneous, and the waveform begins at its lowest value with a step up to the top of the ramp on the first wrap. Those two features explain the sound. A sawtooth contains every harmonic, odd and even, each falling in level in inverse proportion to its number, which is the same series a bowed or plucked string produces when the excitation is one-directional. That is why the shape sounds rich and slightly rough at the same time, and why it is the traditional starting point for subtractive synthesis: a filter placed after a saw has the entire series to work with. The wrap is the other half of the story: an ideal sawtooth changes value instantaneously once per cycle, which implies unbounded high-frequency content, and a sampled signal cannot represent that. Content above half the sample rate folds back, so a high fundamental produces aliasing. As with the other shapes in this family, no band-limiting is applied. The harmonic series is also why the shape responds so well to filtering: reducing the upper partials with a low-pass filter thins the tone smoothly, and removing the fundamental altogether leaves the higher ones intact, which is how the classic thin string-like tone is made. When the same pitch is wanted with a softer edge, the triangle removes most of that upper content and the sine removes all of it.
What to expect and what not to:
- Harmonics above Nyquist alias instead of being filtered away.
- The instantaneous wrap means the file begins with a step and ends wherever the ramp happens to be when the duration runs out.
- Only a rising ramp is produced, with no falling variant.
- There is no filter, so the harmonic balance cannot be shaped after generation.
- Amplitude is linear rather than in decibels.
- The output is mono and capped at sixty seconds.
Use it when a bright, harmonically dense waveform is what you need: a starting tone for testing a filter, a rough-edged tone to layer for a lead or a bass, or a signal to check how a system handles a sudden transition once per cycle. The square wave generator produces a similar level of brightness from odd harmonics alone, the triangle wave generator produces a much gentler ramp with far fewer upper harmonics, and the sine generator provides the same pitch with none at all.
How to use Sawtooth Wave Generator
- Set the frequency, and pick a lower value if the aliasing artefacts are noticeable.
- Choose the duration and amplitude for the file.
- Select a sample rate and press generate to synthesise it.
- Check the preview, then download the WAV if the character suits the job.
When to use Sawtooth Wave Generator vs related tools
Sawtooth Wave Generator is the right choice when a harmonically rich waveform is wanted, whether for synthesis or for testing how a system copes with a fast transition. Square Wave Generator offers a simpler odd-harmonic spectrum and Triangle Wave Generator a much softer one, while Tone Generator puts all five shapes behind a single interface when the choice is still open.
