Hotels quote a base nightly rate, then layer on lodging tax (10–18% typical, 20%+ in big cities), resort or destination fees ($15–45 per night), and sometimes cleaning or parking charges. Compare the All-In Price

Booking sites sort by nightly rate, which is the least useful number on the page. Re-sort mentally by total including taxes and fees: for a 3-night stay, a $140 room with a $30 resort fee costs more than a $160 room with none. Cut the Fees You Can Control

You cannot negotiate taxes, but you can often avoid resort fees by booking a property without amenities, or by choosing vacation rentals with a flat cleaning fee instead of per-night extras.
