Why is the Fertile Window Exactly 6 Days?

The fertile window is a biological intersection of two lifespans: the sperm and the egg.

• The Egg: Once ovulation occurs and the egg is released from the ovary into the fallopian tube, it begins to rapidly degrade. An unfertilized egg only survives for 12 to 24 hours. If it is not fertilized within this incredibly short timeframe, it dissolves, and conception is biologically impossible until the next month.
• The Sperm: Conversely, healthy sperm are highly resilient. In the presence of fertile cervical mucus (which the body produces right before ovulation), sperm can survive inside the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days.

Because sperm can "wait" in the fallopian tubes for the egg to arrive, the fertile window technically opens 5 days before ovulation, and completely closes 24 hours after ovulation.

The Peak Days for Intercourse

While the window is 6 days long, not all days are equal. Massive clinical studies analyzing thousands of pregnancies have proven that the highest probability of conception occurs if you have intercourse 1 to 2 days before ovulation. Having intercourse on the day of ovulation itself actually carries a slightly lower probability, because the egg may degrade before the sperm can travel all the way up the reproductive tract.

If you are actively trying to conceive, reproductive endocrinologists generally recommend having intercourse every other day starting at the beginning of your fertile window, and every day during your two peak days.

It is vital to understand that this calculator provides a mathematical estimate based on averages. The human body is not a clock. High stress, poor sleep, travel, or minor illness can all cause the brain to delay the hormonal surge required to trigger ovulation.

If you want to absolutely confirm that the dates provided by this calculator are correct for your unique body, you should pair this calendar with at-home tracking methods:

1. Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPKs): These are cheap urine test strips that detect the Luteinizing Hormone (LH) surge that happens 24-36 hours before the egg is released. When the test line is as dark as the control line, you are in your peak window.
2. Basal Body Temperature (BBT): By taking your temperature the exact moment you wake up every morning with a highly sensitive thermometer, you can confirm ovulation has occurred. The hormone progesterone, released immediately after the egg drops, causes a sustained spike in your resting body temperature.
