Reading the Numbers

One kilowatt-hour is 1,000 watts run for one hour — roughly what a 1,500 W space heater consumes in 40 minutes. Devices with heating elements or motors, such as dryers, AC units, and kettles, dominate household electricity bills.

Cutting the Bill

Target the biggest consumers first: heating and cooling, water heating, laundry, and refrigeration. Replacing incandescent bulbs with LEDs, sealing drafts, and washing in cold water typically deliver the fastest payback.
