What is the difference between scale factor and the 1:X ratio?
They are reciprocals of each other. The scale factor is drawn length divided by real length, so a 1:50 drawing has a factor of 0.02. The 1:X notation used in title blocks is the real length divided by the drawn length — the X in 1:50. The tool shows both because drawings are described either way depending on the discipline: architects and structural engineers usually say 1:50, while detailers comparing a part to full size often think in factors.
Can the calculator handle enlargement scales like 2:1 or 5:1?
Yes. Enter a drawn length that is longer than the real length and the factor comes out above 1, with the 1:X result shown as a ratio below one (for example 1:0.5 for a 2:1 detail). Why does the scale factor stay the same whatever unit I pick?
Because the tool divides one length by another, and as long as both lengths share a unit the unit cancels out. Switching from millimetres to inches only changes what you type into the fields.
