Why do exit doors need to swing in the direction of travel?
So an exiting crowd cannot push a door closed against itself. In a panic, people press against the doors ahead of them, and a door that swings away from the exit path opens with that pressure while one that swings into it is held shut. What is the 30-inch landing rule for ramps?

Why does the checklist care about firestopping at penetrations?
Because a penetration is where a fire-resistance-rated assembly stops being rated. A wall or floor rated for two hours of fire resistance keeps fire and smoke in check only if every pipe, duct, cable tray and conduit passing through it is sealed back to the rating with tested firestop materials — and where ducts are involved, with fire dampers that close when the duct heats. The checklist item exists because penetrations are the most commonly omitted detail in rated assemblies: the wall is specified correctly, and the hole cut through it is not.
