Frequency Sweep Generator
You Might Also Need
Frequency Sweep Generator wraps the arithmetic of a sweep in a workflow, with presets for the common ranges, a reverse direction and a duration long enough for a slow pass. It is the sweep tool for the job rather than for the theory.
What is Frequency Sweep Generator?
Choose a preset or set the endpoints yourself, pick a curve, optionally reverse the direction, and generate. The result is a single pass from one frequency to the other across the time you specify.
What is on the page:
- Four presets covering the full band from twenty hertz to twenty kilohertz over twenty seconds, a subwoofer range from ten to one hundred and twenty hertz over fifteen seconds, a speech band from one hundred hertz to four kilohertz over ten seconds, and a room mode finder from twenty to three hundred hertz over thirty seconds.
- Free entry of a start and end frequency from one to twenty thousand hertz.
- A curve selector for log, described as equal octave spacing, or linear, described as equal hertz spacing.
- A reverse checkbox that swaps the endpoints so the pass runs downward instead of upward.
- A duration from half a second to two minutes, defaulting to twenty, which is long enough for the tone to linger at each frequency.
- An amplitude slider from one to one hundred percent, defaulting to seventy.
The presets exist because the ranges people actually need are a small set: a full band check, a subwoofer test, a speech-band check and a room mode hunt. The room mode preset is the interesting one, since it runs from twenty to three hundred hertz over thirty seconds and therefore spends a full second on roughly ten hertz of range, which is slow enough for a standing wave in a room to build to its full level as the sweep passes through it. That is the reason a log sweep is the default: the same duration stretched over twenty to twenty thousand hertz linearly would rush through the low frequencies where room modes live and crawl through the top octave where almost nothing happens. Reverse is provided because a rattle or a resonance sometimes announces itself more clearly on the way down than on the way up.
What the tool leaves out:
- No repeating or looping sweep, since the whole page is built around a single pass.
- No stepped or held tones, so a specific frequency cannot be sustained at its ends.
- The amplitude is constant across the sweep, with no compensation for how the system responds.
- Curve choice is limited to linear and exponential, with no custom profile.
- A stereo version is not available; the output is one channel.
- Nothing is measured or recorded during the sweep, so the analysis is done separately with a meter or an analyser.
Use it for the jobs a sweep is suited to: finding a resonance by ear as the tone passes through it, checking a room or a speaker across the band, confirming a subwoofer reaches as low as its specification claims, or producing a rising or falling effect for a mix. When the tone has to rise and fall repeatedly rather than pass once, the chirp generator does that, and when the sweep is called for with no presets and nothing to set up, the plain sweep tone generator gets there in fewer clicks.
How to use Frequency Sweep Generator
- Pick a preset if one of the four ranges matches your job, or type the start and end frequencies yourself.
- Choose the log curve for anything that will be heard, or linear when even hertz spacing is what the analysis needs.
- Set the duration and amplitude, and tick reverse if the pass should run downward.
- Generate the file, then play it and listen or measure with a separate analyser.
When to use Frequency Sweep Generator vs related tools
Frequency Sweep Generator is the practical sweep tool, with presets and a reverse option that save time on the common tasks. Sweep Tone Generator performs the same single pass with fewer controls, and Chirp Generator is the right choice when the tone should rise and fall repeatedly instead of once. To see the sweep's shape or measure what a room does with it, Spectrogram Viewer and Frequency Analyzer read the result.
